Casting Callout - The Gribble Line Podcast Series
Envelope Audio and Left Hand Films are casting parts for the new 8-part scripted podcast series, The Gribble Line. The series is a historical docu-drama following the life of Reverend John Brown Gribble, sent by the Anglican Church in the 1880s to establish a mission for Yingkarta Yamaji Indigenous people near Carnarvon, in West Australia. He was maligned, and his every effort was destroyed by the pastoralists of the area who wished to continue exploiting the indigenous population. Gribble ultimately paid a harsh price for his efforts, an ideal man who was willing to sacrifice everything to stand up for what he believed was right.

Cast of Characters
COLONIAL SECRETARY SIR MALCOLM FRASER: Mid-50s, England born, spent time in New Zealand before settling in Perth. Tactful and mild-mannered.
CHARLES CROWTHER: Mid-50s. Born in England, came to Australia as 16-year-old. Elected to represent the pastoralists of Carnarvon who he feels have managed the natives well. Has no time or sympathy for a do-gooder missionary like Gribble.
SPEAKER, SIR LUKE LEAKE: Late 50s, large, genial and charitable, speaks well, though with a slight hesitancy.
CAPTAIN PINCOMBE: 40s. Originally from North Devon. Experienced mariner with a love of dramatic high seas adventure stories and a tendency to go for rhetoric over realism.
CHIEF JUSTICE ONSLOW: Mid 40s, Englishman, Cambridge-graduate. Truly believes in better treatment for Aboriginal people, but will turn out to have a politician’s instinct for self-preservation.
ALFRED ROUSE: Gruff, know-it-all station owner who adopts the tone of the North-West ‘residential expert’. A bully, at heart.
CHARLES FOSS: Carnarvon’s Residential Magistrate. A friendly, witty Dubliner in his 50s. Extremely competent with a natural air of authority (so he has no need to prove it).
BISHOP PARRY: 60-year-old, West-Indies born, Rugby and Oxford educated. A decent, well-intentioned man whose reluctance to get on the wrong side of the wealthy power-brokers of Perth will lead to moral dilemmas of his own making.
ARCHDEACON BROWN: A 65-year-old, with a tactful, kindly manner. (Born UK)
PHIL RYAN: An easy-going Australia-born station manager in his 30s.
STATION OWNER: Could be combined with Phil Ryan, who is actually a kinder man, but one of the strands here is the revelation that even the nicest people can shock us with their racist views.
MRS ROSTON: Refined, woman in her 40s.
MR ROSTON: Well-spoken 50-ish Aussie, a straight-talker but with the same innate racist views of his peers.
ROBERT BUSH: Pastoralist in his 40s, known for his ‘bush skills’ and fine-cultured tastes. Is genuinely troubled by his run-in with Gribble but aware that this mad cleric’s criticism of ‘rule and property’ will ultimately bring him undone.
BEASLEY: Aggressive 30-year-old Aussie ‘bloke’.
DRUNK 1: Aussie larrikin, early 20s .
DRUNK 2: Kiwi version of the larrikin, 30-ish.
